COLDEN
COMMON HISTORY
|
 |
Being crowned Champions of
the Hampshire Premier League
was a huge thrill and a massive achievement last season
which was complemented by our Under 16’s (coached by Mike
Pemberton and Kearn Hamer) when they dramatically secured
their league title on the final day of the season.
Colden Common Football Club has a record to be proud of
historically as is shown in the Hounours elsewhere in this
programme. Founded in the late 19th century, the club was
re-formed in 1956 primarily by the Banford family whose
stewardship and guidance enabled the club to become so
successful.
Although formed as a Saturday club, CCFC has cause to thank
their Sunday ‘wing’ for providing the foundation of a
staggering rise through the leagues during the late 1980’s
early 1990’s.
Competing within the Eastleigh and Southampton Football
League’s honours were sparse with just the Eastleigh
Benevolent Cup and Southampton Junior Division 4 title
jostling for space in the trophy cabinet! However, the
decision to field a Sunday side ~ 1973 to 1983 ~ eventually
provided glorious repercussions. An incredible haul of 24
league and cup honour’s - in which our managerial duo, Ged
Magee and Mick Pratt played significant parts - came under
the managerial guidance of Ron Shaw and Mick Geddes before
‘The force’ switched to Saturday football and rapid
progression followed.
Our journey from Southampton Junior League Division Two to
Hampshire League Division 1 took just six years and we then
progressed to Sydenhams Wessex before settling in our
current competition – the Puma Engineering Hampshire Premier
Football League.
The club also support’s both Under 16 and 18 sides that have
historically provided an almost endless stream of talent
that has been guided onward and upward through our senior
sides[MR1] .
Meanwhile Common Veterans, led by Elliott Costick continue
to show The Club in the right light and gather more and more
members as the years go by, while our home ground (lovingly
tended by Eric Laversuch and his ‘band’) is the envy of
most.
Any small club needs a sound ‘back-room’ and we are indeed
fortunate to have an outstanding committee and loyal
sponsors ~ H.J.DUNFORD & SON (Motors) LTD in particular ~ as
well as many players who show CCFC the commitment and
loyalty much respected around the County. Behind the scenes
the likes of Jack, Angie and Cliff Banford, Eric & Barbara
Laversuch, Steve Long, Janet Lissenden, Dave Hadfield,
Darren Heskins, Trevor & Caroline Flood, to name but a few,
all feature prominently for The Common Cause to help make
Colden Common FC ‘The Friendly Club’, and ........
